Yahoo’s Fantasy Sports Has Huge Value

Yahoo does fantasy sports very well. I have been in more Yahoo leagues than I care to count, and every time I use them, I get served big-time banner ads that undoubtedly create a massive impression in my lizard-consumer brain.

Yahoo’s fantasy sports content is pretty good, including a live Sunday morning show that helps users plan for their weeks. Today was Super Sunday for fantasy fans, where users were battling it out for the grand final.

The thing is, there is a lot of money in fantasy sports. Under-the-radar bets are made in many leagues and these bets are getting larger and more widespread by the year. As the pots get larger, more users are looking for content. And many of these users are professionals, forging their fantasy teams in an office setting.

The interest is skyrocketing, and while Yahoo does a good job, the web content is not level with the interest. Either Yahoo should do a better job bringing their content up front, or they should hire more fantasy analysts.

There is definitely room for somebody should step in with better content.

The leagues Yahoo, CBS Sportsline, and ESPN set up are fine leagues. But what makes the difference for the astute fantasy user in the future is going to be quality analysis by professional analysts.

It wouldn’t be a completely bad idea to hire twenty people and start a fantasy sports channel, on cable. Many fantasy fans play baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, etc. There is some downtime during the year, but the addictive nature of fantasy sports and the huge amounts of underground bets placed on it will conjure a loyal, easily-analyzed demographic that can be shown very targeted advertising that they will see repeatedly. Big brands can imprint their label to great affect if delivered well.

But we shall see.
