Simple Link Building Tactics

I had the chance to go over some simple link building tactics on a call today, and I realized that I have never posted a few simple ideas. Remember that links are not over half of the equation in achieving better search visibility.

There are some easy ways to make people want to link back your site.

1. Simply ask them. A lot of times is you know someone, just asking them nicely will get them to give you a nice link.

2. Say something nice about someone. The only thing better than receiving a compliment is receiving one in front of people. So if you read a blog posting you like, give it a nice mention on yours, let the blogger know, and there is a good chance they will link to you. This also works well with vendors you might have. Simply put up a page saying how much you really enjoy their product, let them know, and there is a great chance they will link to that page.

3. Find your fans. Do a search for your company or website name, and see who mentions you. If they don’t link to you already, send a nice email letting them know you appreciate the mention and ask for a link.

4. Get listed. There are a lot of Web directories out there. Start submitting yourself to these directories. Yahoo and DMOZ are the two essentials, but search around and you will find a lot more.

5. Be Newsworthy. Putting out press releases can have a big impact on your links. One great release can get picked up by many papers, and get you the links you’re looking for quickly.

6. Syndicate. RSS is one of the best things to come from blogs. Create a blog on your site, post often, and make sure to submit your RSS to blog directories. This can turn into a great link building stream.

7. Donate. Donating a small amount of money to a school, local little league team, or any other organization is a great way to buy yourself some legitimate links.

8. Have an opinion. Even though most blogs have implemented nofollow tags on their comment section, some will still help you out with a link. Just make sure that you are leaving a real comment, with some value added to the blog. comment spam is one of the most annoying things to deal with today.

9. Demand a link from partners or vendors. We encourage our clients to make getting a link from a vendor part of their deal. If you spend six figures with Salesforce.com, there should be no issue with getting a link from the. Or if you rent an office from a management company with a website, why not ask them to place a link for you?

10. Blogitive. With USWeb’s Blogitive system, we distribute your press release to over 2,000 indexed blogs and pay them to write a posting, with a very relevant link on their blog. This is the most effective link building strategy we have ever seen.
