Obama’s Social Media Domination Continues with iPhone App
Barack Obama’s campaign has released a free iPhone app on the iTunes app store, and it’s not something to scoff at. It is powerful, useful, and could do a lot to help him out down the stretch.
The app leverages your iPhone’s address book to order your contacts by which ones are in the battleground states, and gives you the option of calling them up. So it’s simple: install the Obama app and then all of your friends from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida (among other states) will be at the top of the queue. The first option on the Obama app’s menu is “Call Friends.”
There are also options for getting involved, finding local events, getting fresh news on the campaign, and, of course, donating money. Featured prominently on the bottom left corner is the good ol’ “Donate” button.
It is estimated that the Obama campaign may have up to a million volunteers on election day, and seeing that many of those volunteers are young college-aged students, the iPhone’s demographics match up beautifully with those of Obama’s. Just imagine an army of young people armed with iPhones networking their way through November 4th. Sheer brilliance.
There is another startling statistic for John McCain that I found today through Andrew Cherwenka at The Huffington Post: the top twenty search results for John McCain on YouTube yield a perfect 20/20 of videos that portray the candidate in a negative light. The top 20 searches for Obama portray him in a positive light. Also, Obama’s positive videos (which are by nature harder to get hits for) have been viewed 47 million times compared to 21 million views for John McCain’s top twenty videos. Not only is Obama getting more hits, but they are almost universally positive. It’s a rout.
Add to this Obama’s domination on social news sites, organic search, and other forms of social media and the end result, like him or not, is that Barack Obama’s campaign has obliterated McCain in the arena of social media marketing.
