iPhone Reception Test Reveals Little
A small electronic antenna testing outfit in Sweden has revealed there is little to no difference between the antennae of iPhones and other phones, like the Nokia N73. In spite of many complaints of iPhones having fewer reception bars and some lost calls, the tests showed the iPhone’s antenna is as strong as other phones.
Case closed, right? Many are attributing the complaints about the iPhone to the fact that they were rolled out at such a high volume and with such fanfare that every small problem has been amplified, especially due to the often high-profile nature of the user base.
A separate survey by Wired.com revealed far more complaints about the various networks the iPhone was on than the phone itself. AT&T has been criticized by users of the iPhone and other handsets. Personally, I had a period of a month or so where I was having problems on my old Motorola phone right after 3G was installed in my home area. Problems have been few with my new Nokia E71, but they remain.
On another personal note, it was a bit of an iPhone Mecca at the Outside Lands Festival this last weekend in San Francisco. I’ve heard people say that iPhones don’t react well when there are a lot of others around, and I believe it. Perhaps iPhones on average utilize a lot more network resources than other smartphones (I don’t see how it couldn’t be true) but they were basically dead during Radiohead’s concert on Friday night. My Nokia was a little better as I was able to receive an important text message, but it may have been luck since it appeared to be down for much of the time.
