Google Releases SEO Primer
Any questions about Google’s possible distrust about SEO have gone out the window now that they have released a 22 page PDF that tells web site owners how to rank well on Google’s organic search results.
The guide is short and pretty basic, with advice about meta tags, URL structures, linking, navigation,and content. It’s nothing that will surprise most webmasters (except perhaps their section about utilizing nofollows), but is a great basic guide for somebody who is just getting started building web sites and wants a basic idea of how to construct their site in an SEO-friendly manner.
Hopefully, this will put to rest any hesitancy people have about SEO, with Google itself is attaching its name to the same basic techniques SEOs have been using for a long time.
Some of the things they cover:
- Create unique and accurate page titles
- Make use of the “description” meta tag
- Improve the structure of your URL’s
- Make your site easier to navigate
- Offer quality content and services
- Write better anchor texts
- Use heading tags appropriately
- Optimize your use of images
- Making effective use of Robots.txt
- Be aware of “nofollow” tags for links
- Promoting your website in the right ways
- Make use of free webmaster tools
- Take advantage of web analytics services
