Google Analytics Overwhelmed
Google has halted the sign up process of further accounts after they hit the 234,725 (plus an estimated additional 200,000 profiles) mark. Tracking the analytics on over 400,000 sites is proving to be very difficult, even for the Google gods. Below are Google’s exact comments:
“Google Analytics has experienced extremely strong demand, and as a result, we have temporarily limited the number of new signups as we increase capacity. In the meantime, please submit your name and email address and we will notify you as soon as we are ready to add new accounts. Thank you for your patience.”
Obviously too much success is not a horrible problem to have. While some customers are irritated, I’m sure that they will still take advantage of the offer.
Some people suggest that an invitation approach would have been wiser for Google. It worked well for their gmail. But I think Google wants the floodgates open. The expense will be significant. But the amount of data they can collect is a tremendous opportunity. I would have to double check, but I would have to think they are the biggest analytics provider already. Or at least will be within the first month of the product being available.
