Finally: Macs Get Netflix Streaming Thanks to Silverlight
One of the biggest pains about getting Mac in March was that Netflix Watch Instantly didn’t work on Mac. In fact, the main reason I wanted to get XP on my Mac through Bootcamp was so I could use this feature, especially after they teamed up with Starz and added over a 2500 extra movies.
Now, instead of Flash, Netflix will roll out the feature using Microsoft’s Silverlight.
Say what you want about Microsoft, but they are being persistent with Silverlight and it has actually looked pretty good at times and poor at others. The HD stream by Move Networks of the Democratic Convention used Silverlight extremely well and it looked terrific.
NBC had much worse luck with Silverlight during the Olympics, and (if memory serves me) actually switched over the Flash in the middle.
So Silverlight can look really good if well utilized, like with the Move Networks video player. Hopefull, Netflix will use similar technology with Mac streaming.
