Comscore’s Verdict: Holiday Online Sales Brisk
Although the gain was not as much as the 26% jump last year, online spending for the holidays went up 19% since November. Spending between Thanksgiving and Christmas went up 21% over last year.
Almost $28 billion was spent in the 57 days from November 1st to December 27th. comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni blames the slower growth partly on good weather and economic unease but even with the growth was as strong as last year, there are other reasons to be optimistic.
Online shopping on the day after Christmas was more than double what it was last year, so people who didn’t feel like taking on the crowds stayed at home and shopped in record numbers. This high number also indicatates that online sales and promotions also did a far better job of attracting consumers than previous years. Much of the attraction of shopping after Christmas is to get a good deal, and with more and more people seeing they can get such deals online, it’s good news for e-merchants.
