Bullied Student Sues Facebook
Denise Finkle of Oceanside, NY saw the dark side of social networking head-on. She was one of a growing number of young people subjected to cyber-bullying through Facebook. For her, it was a group set up by peers at her high school.
Now Finkle is suing four former students, their parents, and Facebook for bullying which included accusations of bestiality, intravenous drug use, and contraction of AIDS.
Such groups are against the Facebook rules of conduct, and much is being done to try to stop cyber-bullying. Complaints are supposed to be looked at by the social networks in a timely manner, and authorities from around the world are scrambling to find ways to police incidents such as these.
Obviously, if Facebook made some error in their normal process of eliminating these bullying groups, there may be a case. But this appears to be a situation where parents and school authorities needed to intervene to make sure this didn’t continue, just as they would if the bullying were face to face.
But this is not to discount what the young woman went through, or the seriousness of cyber-bullying. It’s a depressing fact of the web that people who are normally regular a-holes turn into mega a-holes behind a computer screen.
