Blog SEO Part 1 - Internal vs. External Domain
I see more and more sites setting up blogs to take advantage of the search benefits. Many of these site owners still act as though there is some sort of mystery behind the blogging benefits, but it’s actually quite simple; you are adding relevant content to your site on a regular basis through a CMS that is very well optimized and syndicated. This means you have more content about your subject, which will help with long-tail search terms, and you are releasing your content through the Web which should hopefully increase the back links to your site.
But after speaking at Blogworld I see there is still a lot of confusion about how this all works. So I decided to write a 5 part series of blog posts of some tips to get the most out of your blog in search.
The first post is going to cover the question of weather or not your blog should be on your domain, or a separate domain. It’s a question that comes up often.
There are benefits to both. Speaking from a pure SEO perspective, I would say that integrating the blog with your current domain would be best. I prefer a nice directory like, http://www.yoursite.com/blog. Although, you could also use a nice keyword in the URL structure as well like, http://www.yoursite.com/target-keyword-blog/. This would be an interesting approach to get a little more back link relevancy.
There is also the idea of a sub-domain, which many blogs opt for. For example, blog.yoursite.com. This would be good if you’re trying for some simple brand protection by having a second listing on the page for your name.
Either way you go, the most important thing is that you make sure to add content on a regular basis, and get that content out there. More next week on that.
