Ask.com Tries to Trick Your Grandma
Ask.com, much like that stray kitty you feed although you know you shouldn’t, now stays with you after using it.
Try this: get on to Ask.com and search for anything. Now click on one of the organic results. The Ask.com searchbar stays at the top of the page, and the URL is hosted by ask. What this means is if your grandma is still using Ask because she likes that Jeeves character and she bookmarks or copies a link, it will have that Ask.com bar there permanently.
In fairness to Ask.com, users can easily turn it off by click in the “x” in the upper right corner. But this is kind of a cheap move by them.
Advertisers don’t have to deal with it, though. Clicking on any of Ask’s sponsored results sends you to the normal landing page.
Hey, maybe it works. Since Ask probably gets very few people setting them as the default search engine in their web browser’s toolbar, they have to find some way to get used more often. Tricking grandma is probably their best option.
