Another Week

The big news this week was the reported offer to purchase Facebook.com for $750 million. The bigger news of course was that they turned this down. CEO Mark Zuckerberg supposedly will not let his company go for under $2 billion. With all the talk about Web 2.0 being a bubble (which I think is the type of thing that people who were dumb enough to get nailed by the last “bubble” say), this may either be a pipe dream, or a sad truth about the hyped up value of social networks.

Another type of social network I stumbled upon this week is WeeWorld. WeeWorld.com lets you create a little guy or girl that looks like they walked off South Park, and lets you go and chat, in an environment that looks like South Park. I don’t quite see the business model, but that’s besides the point. The technology is very cool. I went to try out the system, but found myself alone in the virtual Wee World. It’s definitely worth checking out though.

Speaking of cool technology, check out this amazing photo system in CSS. For those less technical readers, let me just assure you that this is very amazing to pool off without any Flash or Javascript.

Also in the press as always is our favorite search engine/everything, Google. Google is playing with Google Payments (Paypal killer) to go along with Google Base (ebay Killer). By the way, for those who don’t know, eBay owns Paypal. So those who say that Microsoft and Google will be going to war, may want to check out the war that has already started with against eBay. Google Talk vs Skype, Google Base vs. eBay and Craigslist, Google Payment vs. Paypal. I happen to like eBay much more than Microsoft, so I’m anxious to see eBay defend itself.

While we are on the subject of Google, they seemed to have caught on to some Spam in the form of leased pages on popular site. I know of at least one major financial site that got nailed for having some leased content on their server. Matt Cutts has let everyone know that this is now on the radar and hit list of their Spam cops.

If your one life isn’t enough for you, you can soon have another stress filled Second Life. Linden Labs scored $11 m in capitol to further develop and market their virtual reality game. The game has what they call an open ended “metaverse” and allows you to move about fairly freely. This is big news right now in the gaming world, although I can’t see the substance behind the hype. It just makes me think of There, the previous “everything has changed” virtual world game. But, this would did get a few million bucks from Jeff Bezos.

And speaking of hype, the dating site Consumating seems to be picking up steam. Whether its the cool tagging system, or perhaps the fact that it’s cheaper than the Match.com $20 monthly fee by a full $20, the site is starting to pick up members fast. Asking around about people who have signed up and played around with it, I hear that it’s great for a short time, but doesn’t keep their attention like myspace does. Although that may just be the volume of people in comparison. Either way, I’m anxious to see something take some market share from myspace, and I don’t think it’s going to be Facebook.
