Agency.com Makes a Horrible Video for Subway
I should say that competitive nature aside, I have never been a big fan of Agency.com. They have never really struck me as an especially talented or creative group of people. Well, they have just proved it beyond a doubt.
Everyone is very into the viral video idea right now. It makes sense. For a small investment of making a short video, you may get millions of eyeballs seeing your brand and/or product. So Subway decided that they wanted to see what the creative people at Agency.com could do. What they did was display a complete lack of knowledge on what makes a video viral. Instead they made a cheesy, apprentice style rip off, video that is only getting noticed because of how bad it is. You can view this disasterpiece here. If you check out the comments below the video, you’ll see exactly what people thought of their creation. Here are a couple of my favorites:
“With this video, agency.com has become the Spinal Tap of ad agencies.”
“You definitely succeeded in viral stupidity.”
I bet by that creative director watching himself over and over and over and over again. He most probably stood over some poor guy ofr hours in the editing suite making sure he looked cool.
Exactly what you’d expect from Agency.com. Dull, uninspired, lacking in vision and irrelevant. “interactive” dinosaurs like this agency will soon become extinct. Thank God!
If you want to see the only good thing to come out this, and someone who truly gets how to be viral, check out Jim Coudal’s unsolicited response.
And just for the record, if I was to have handled this for Subway, I would have first come to the conclusion that me, or any of my staff is especially funny. I would have approached some of the more talented people on YouTube, who get over 200,000 views per video, and paid them do make something truly funny and viral. For a great example of this, check out the video Barats and Bereta did for Windward Reports. These are a couple smart, very funny guys from YouTube who probably did this for very little money. Notice that YouTube shows over 370,000 views. And keep in mind that this was also on other sites like Break.com, which probably got it millions of views. My advice to Subway would be, call us, call Jim Coudal, or just contact some popular people on YouTube. But you can do better than Agency.com.
BTW, Agency.com may want to take care of this issue in Google. Kinda funny that they say their a search marketing firm as well.
