What is going on with Apple & NBC?

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Apple announced that they have decided to no longer sell NBC television shows in the iTunes Store. Anything from this September’s season on, will not be available for purchase on iTunes because of this decision. For iTunes users it basically means you will not be able to download the popular NBC shows, like Battlestar Galactica, The Office and Heroes, to iPods or AppleTV. That’s disappointing, I really liked the Heros series.

Is NBC just being greedy by asking Apple to pay outrageous prices for their new TV episodes this upcoming season? Or could there be an underlying reason for them to bail out of iTunes now? Makes you wonder if NBC’s ownership stake in hulu, an upcoming iTunes competitor has motivated this drastic move.

How to be a Productive Blogger

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Inspired by Web Worker Daily’s article, “GTD For Bloggers: The Art of Stress-Free Blogging, by Leo Babauta. I’d like to share some of his ideas presented in my streamlined version of what he says the experts are saying about this subject.

Blogging for a living can create a lot of stress and pressure. This really hit at home for me. Is there truly a way to be a stress free blogger? I’ve been reading about this book, which has been out for awhile now, called GTD or “Getting Things Done,” by David Allen, a widely recognized productivity expert. I’ve also had the opportunity of listening to an audiobook titled,”4-Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss, which also provides unique time management techniques and strategies. I really enjoyed absorbing their ideas, concepts, and recommendations. They’re people that know how to manage their time wisely and are successful at it.

Protecting Your Brand in Search Engines

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

No matter how much I study up on my industry, it is my role as a consumer that is constantly showing me the reality of social media marketing. This week I did some bed shopping, and once again I got some good insight into the way social media can affect a consumer.

I can be a simple consumer, advertising works well on me. Maybe it’s my marketing nature to want to here the message in the noise from other marketers, or maybe I’m just a little gullible. Either way I was pretty taken with the idea of the “Sleep Number Bed” from Select Comfort. I liked the idea so much I was selling others on it before I even tried the bed out. [more...]

SMS - Text Messaging is it Free or Not?

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

SMS (Short Message Service) or more referred to as text messaging, is growing in popularity among all ages. You have to admit, its a simplistic technology that even the average Joe and myself can learn and use in a heart beat. We’ve all seen teens and young adults using it as their main source of communication. My son, including most students with cell phones, have either had their phone taken away or been given a warning at school for receiving SMS messages from friends in other classes. Kid’s are still passing notes in class…get that. Welcome to the electronic forum of notes.

Local City Information from the Web

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

How do you find information about a specific city or location? Most of us turn to the Internet search engines to find everything we need to know. I turn to Google, Yahoo, Map Quest to retrieve detailed Maps, directions, information in general. I favor Google’s search engine to assist me in finding out about local businesses, attractions, restaurants, museums, theaters, hotels, shopping malls, local town specific events, among other things. Especially when I’m out of my hometown, I rely on any information I can find on the web. The web basically becomes my lifeline to the local city. I’ve come to be dependent on the web to be my main resource of information about a new city. My alternate resource is relying on the word of mouth information passed on by local citizens or business owners/employees. That’s pretty much how I’d discover something unique in a city.

Thawte’s Email Certs May Not Be What is Claimed - read the Terms of Use

Friday, August 24th, 2007

The thought of email security is a great concept. Securing your website, servers, and domains from computer hackers has been a big deal ever since computers and the Internet have been around. Having your identity stolen just by someone gaining access to your private and confidential information has been on everyone’s mind also. Unfortunately, people have fallen into the hands of almost any software program company or any company that claims to offer that safety net of security and protection. Microsoft’s security Updates, Norton Antivirus Programs, Verisign and now Thawte’s digital email certifications are some of the protections offered. What are they really offering? Have you read the fine print of the “Terms of Use” to be sure?

Craigslist and YouTube the next Dynamic Duo

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

People are starting to get really creative utilizing the latest technologies that are available. We’re starting to see Realtors like YouTube user rentthisjoint creating homemade videos of walk-thrus of the real estate properties he is trying to sell or rent and add it as a link within his posts on Craigslist. Great idea! He claims that he was able to rent out his properties within hours of posting the links to YouTube. Hey, why not! The video helps a potential buyer or renter by giving them a first hand look at the property’s individuality and uniqueness. Seeing it first-hand as if you were actually there.

Wireless Broadband Connections

Wireless Broadband how does it work for you?

Here’s my experience and review of a few wireless broadband devices: Sierra Wireless AT&T Air Card 875u, AT&T 3/4 3G GT Max 3.6 express card, and the Verizon Novatel Wireless CDMA 740 express Card.

For the past two days, I’ve had major connectivity issues with both AT&T cards. Using these cards for the first times, I’ve put them to the test to see what I can actually do with my wireless broadband cards from AT&T. Unfortunately, it’s not working out as I had hoped. Didn’t seem to matter where I was located within the major service areas, the loss of connection issue remained.
